Dr. Carrie Rinker-Schaeffer was born in Ohio. She received her B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Kentucky. After completing her Ph.D., she pursued her postdoctoral research on the identification of metastasis-suppressor genes for prostate cancer in the laboratory of Dr. John Isaacs at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Her major interest is in identifying genes, which regulate prostate cancer metastasis. She and her co-workers have transferred human chromosomes 17, 12, and 13 into highly metastatic prostate and breast cancer cells to test the ability of these microcell hybrids to suppress spontaneous metastasis in SCID mice. Her work has demonstrated that chromosome 17p12-q22 encodes a metastasis-suppressor gene(s) which can block metastasis of prostate and breast cancer cells in vivo. More recently, her laboratory has localized this metastasis suppressing activity to the gene map kinase kinase 4.
